"A stupid idea that is a waste of the taxpayer's money and will only create problems, not solve them."
Bob Capano called on Mayor Bill de Blasio and City Council Speaker Melissa Mark Viverito to drop their plans for a Statue Review Task Force before it’s even created. Capano called the idea, “A stupid idea that is a waste of the taxpayer’s money and will only create problems, not solve them.”
City Council candidate Bob Capano said, “Mayor Bill de Blasio and City Council Speaker Mellissa Mark Viverito are at it again. This time it’s not Intravenous Heroin Centers or Central Park Carriage Horses, but, ill conceived plans to create a Statue Review Task Force that will decide on the political correctness of statues of individuals on city property throughout the 5 boroughs. It’s a stupid idea that is a waste of the taxpayer’s money and will only create problems, not solve them. As someone who has taught high school social studies and an adjunct professor at John Jay College, its like ripping the pages out of a history book. Their plans to purge statues, many of which have stood for over a century, is outrageous and sounds like an action straight out of Mao Tse-tung’s cultural revolution.
“When asked her opinion on the statue of Christopher Columbus that has watched over Columbus Circle since 1892, Speaker Viverito’s response was especially troubling, ‘I would definitely encourage them to take a look at that one as well.’
“The Mayor and the Speaker are on a collision course with myself and other Italian-American New Yorkers if they think they are they are going to tear down this iconic monument donated to the city by our ancestors. Instead of attempting to sow discord among various ethnic groups, perhaps Bill de Blasio and Melissa Mark Viverito should focus on real issues: fixing schools that don’t educate, a failing subway system or the homeless crisis.”
